Week 8 Forum: What Is American Literature?

Part I: Choose a main character in any of the short stories this week. Tell us about him or her. Describe the character physically and give us a few adjectives to describe his/her personality, using quotes from the reading as evidence. Would you like this person if you knew him or her? Why or why not. What is the main problem or conflict in the character’s life. Do you feel he/she handled the problem well or poorly?

 

Part II: Based on all the readings done up to this point, what, in your opinion, are the most important characteristics that distinguish American literature? Do you think that our literature is a good representation of ‘American Identity’?

Part III:  What contemporary author do you think will represent the early 21st century in an American literature class of the future? What do you think this writer brings to the table that is representative of American life or that shows a distinct and important cultural trend or message/theme that is worth studying?

Write a 700- to 1,050-word paper that examines the purpose and history of penitentiaries. Include the following:

• History of punishment
• History of prison development
• Comparison of the Pennsylvania system and the Auburn system
• Impact and involvement of prison labor over time

Scenario:

As the newly appointed safety manager at a large plastics manufacturing company, you are called to the loading dock to find that a large truck, full of cartons of pellets used in the manufacturing process, is engulfed in flames. The truck slid on ice in the parking area and crashed into empty trailers. A call to the city emergency services indicated that they will be delayed indefinitely due to roads made impassible by the ice storm. The Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for the pellets indicates that burning releases toxic smoke. Note that larger companies are likely to have their own emergency response teams equipped and trained to handle the most likely hazards found at the site.

 

Assignment:

Prepare an Incident Action Plan that includes all of the requirements shown below. Respond to each bullet point based on what you know of the situation. Clearly state any assumptions you make in your plan. The list is a subset of the United States Department of Health & Human Services’ suggested comprehensive Incident Action Plan available at www.phe.gov/Preparedness/planning/.

 

Identify at least two incident goals (i.e., where the response system should be at the end of response) and at least two operational objectives (i.e., major areas that must be addressed in the specified operational period to achieve the goals or control objectives).

Describe at least two response strategies (i.e., priorities and the general approach to accomplish the operational objectives) and at least two response tactics (i.e., specific methods developed to achieve the response strategies).

Prepare an organization list showing at least three primary roles and an assignment list with at least three specific tasks and their owners.

Intellectual Disability (ID) is one of several areas of disability under IDEA. Typically ID refers to individual students who possess cognitive abilities which are extremely below average (average IQ scores range from 90-110 and student with an ID have cognitive abilities below 70), and whose adaptive skills are at least 2 years below their same-age peers. Intellectual Disability is one of several areas of disability under IDEA. Although IDEA uses the term Mental Retardation, it should be noted that the term is controversial. Many special education associated groups, teachers and parents advocate strongly for the substitution of the term Intellectual Disabilities instead of Mental Retardation. Some states use the term, Cognitive Disabilities. At this time, lawmakers do not consider it a significant issue enough to change the language in the law.

Children with impairments in sight and hearing constitute a small portion of students who currently receive special education services. However, the range of special education services for these students may be more restrictive than for special education students who are not deaf, blind, or hard of hearing. For this last and final worksheet, please do the following (based on your readings and web research this week):

1)    1) Describe at least three special education services for students with impairments in sight and hearing;

2)    2) Find and describe one professional organization dedicated to students with impairments in sight or hearing.

 

 

Sociologists describe gender roles as learned patterns of behavior that a society expects of men and women.  In other words, what we know as masculinity is a set of qualities that we expect to find in a typical man and femininity a set of qualities we expect to find in a typical woman.  Increasingly we are becoming aware that there may not be only one typical package of qualities that make up being female or male.  Some sociologists prefer to speak of the “performance of gender” since more and more men and women are performing roles once considered the domain of the other gender.
