Program effectiveness is difficult to prove, even when ample quantitative and qualitative data are available. Just because information is easy to count or describe does not mean that it provides insight. For example, a health promotion program that seeks to teach adults in a community to eat fewer fatty foods in order to avoid heart disease. A report about how many heart attacks occurred in the community might provide some insight on overall cardiac health, but there is no way to collect data on the number of heart attacks that did not happen as a result of the program. Moreover, the number of heart attacks alone will not be a relevant data point without being linked to fatty food consumption. However, it may be helpful to look at trends in eating habits as well as trends in heart disease and heart attacks over a 10-year period.

 

As a public health professional, you may be asked to determine what needs to be evaluated (what is being measured) and why, and what data will yield relevant information. For this week’s Discussion, you will practice planning data collection for effective evaluation using a scenario before collecting data for your own programs.

 

Select one of the following four hypothetical public health programs. Consider the methods and data points that would be the most appropriate in order to evaluate its effectiveness.

 

Scenarios:

1.    Boost Your Kids: A U.S. program sponsored by a local health department’s Injury Prevention program. The program seeks to inform parents about the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s recommendations regarding car seat usage.

2.    Babies Benefit: A program offered by an international relief organization in Myanmar to train health care providers to communicate about the use of vitamin A and other supplements during every health care visit and intervention.

3.    Slim Down City: A lifestyle health program aimed at urban residents in the United States, this programs sponsors weekly walks for 10 weeks to promote physical activity and prevent obesity.

4.    The Pink Bus: A program provided by an alliance between a local university health care system and a cancer center, this clinic on wheels provides free and low-cost mammograms to low-income women in Canada.

According to the text, crime has been part of the human condition since people began to live in groups. Ancient documents indicate that conduct we now call murder, theft, or robbery was identified as criminal by civilizations that existed thousands of years ago. Criminal laws regulate human conduct and tell people what they can and cannot do and, in some instances, what they must do under certain circumstances. In this assignment, you will explore different types of criminal conduct and the goals of criminal law.

Write a four to six (4-6) page paper in which you:

1. Determine whether or not a conviction is feasible when an alleged perpetrator does not have the required mens rea but has engaged in the actus rea. Provide a rationale to support your position.
2. Explain the distinction between diplomatic immunity and legislative immunity. Next, support or criticize the premise that diplomatic immunity is vital for Americans abroad.
3. Argue for or against the theory that the courts should not hold a defendant of questionable competency to the standard sentencing guidelines. Provide a rationale to support your response.
4. Identify the four (4) goals of criminal law, and discuss the manner in which these four (4) goals effectuate the purpose of protecting the public and preventing the conviction of innocent persons.
5. Use at least three (3) quality academic resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and similar type Websites do not qualify as academic resources.

2. Explain the effect of power and influence that leaders have on followers in the organization. Are the followers receptive? Would you recommend another strategy? Explain your reasoning. If not, why not?
3. Evaluate the role and effectiveness of transformational and transactional leadership in the organization. Support your (claims, points?) with examples (from?).
4. Assess the traits and characteristics of an effective team leader within the organization.
5. Explain how the leadership supports vision, mission, and strategy in the organization.

Using what you’ve learned from Chapters Six and Eight from Lefrançois as well as other resources along the way, develop a curriculum based assessment (CBA) centered on one of your two instructional plans from Weeks Three and Four.

Part 1:  Provide a Pre-Assessment Description (One-to two-pages).

Use these prompts to guide your exploration of what occurred BEFORE the summative assessment.

1. State measurable and observable objectives (what you wanted students to learn).
2. Describe how you knew learning occurred prior to summative assessment.
3. Describe the instructional strategies used to prepare students for the summative assessment (from your previous instructional plan in either Weeks Three or Four).
4. Explain adjustments you made or should have made to your instruction to ensure mastery of learning objectives.
5. Describe how the use of technology contributed to student preparation for the summative assessment or how it will be added to and contribute to the summative assessment here.

Part 2: Design an easily accessible summative assessment (Approximately two to three pages)

1. Identify the grade level and subject matter and a measurable unit objective(s) and align with the stated standard as prescribed in the original instructional plan from either Week Three or Four and referenced from the Common Core State Standards Initiative.
2. Create a minimum of six, no more than ten, problems/questions/tasks for students to complete that include a variety of test item types (selected response, short answer, extended written response, and/or performance).
3. Label each question with its corresponding:
   • Objective(s) (if more than one is being assessed)
   • Depth of Knowledge (DOK) levels (Note at least two different cognitive levels must be measured on this assessment.)
4. Define and discuss criteria for scoring extended response and performance items.

Part 3: Provide Assessment Reflection (One to two pages).

1. Define how you determined mastery.
2. Explain how you will accommodate or modify for the special population previously described in Week Four (two students with specific learning disabilities in reading and math, one ADHD student, and one English language learner).
3. Describe how you will use the evidence collected.

Grading: You will submit a SINGLE document clearly labeled as Parts 1, 2, and 3. APA formatting will be followed, including the required cover and reference pages. You must use a minimum of five scholarly resources, in addition to the course text.
