Portfolio Instructions

This is my message from my teacher { The introduction and analysis two pages, the cover memo one or two) and look to my files what I attached for you

The Portfolio displays the work you have done throughout the semester. Compiling your work in this way encourages you to reflect on what you have learned in this course, enables you (and others) to see how your writing has improved, and helps you to recognize how the knowledge you have gained about writing will benefit you in the future.

Your final Portfolio must include, in this order:

• Table of Contents (5 points)
• Portfolio Introduction and Analysis (20 points)
• Revision of a previously submitted assignment (20 points)
• Revision Cover Memo (5 points)
• All of the three papers you turned in during the semester (5 points)

Carefully proofread and revise everything before submitting.

IMPORTANT: All Portfolio documents must be clean copies without any comments or grades on them.
You will submit your Portfolio using Pathbrite–the new Portfolio platform we are using at the University of Utah.

Table of Contents
As you are gathering and writing the pieces for the portfolio, you need to create a Table of Contents, which is a list of all of the items included in the portfolio.

Your Table of Contents will be the first page of your portfolio and should include an original Portfolio Title at the top of the page.
The Table of Contents will reflect the overall organization of your portfolio and will help the reader navigate the document. It will also help you think about your organization of your work.

1. Portfolio Analysis and Self-Reflection
2. Revision of a previously submitted assignment
3. Revision Cover Memo
4. …

This is your last chance to revise your Lit. Review, and it should convey your grasp of academic writing at the university level. Use this opportunity to make final changes so that it represents your best work, and take the time to proofread carefully so that your spelling, grammar, and formatting meet academic standards.

Because the Portfolio will be one long document, you should include titles that are specific to your papers, page numbers, and as much other detail as you see fit (sub-section titles, etc.). Consider the audience for the portfolio. What will their reasons be for reading it, and what kinds of information will that audience find useful in the Table of Contents?
Introduction and analysis

In this introduction, you need to tell your readers about what they are going to see. Briefly explain each section and highlight the problems you faced while writing it. Furthermore, in this introduction you might tell your readers how the experience of writing a portfolio has improved your analytical writing skills. The portfolio project is designed to give you a new perspective on the work you have done this semester. It is important to think about where you started and to articulate the specific ways your writing has developed.

In preparation for drafting your introduction and analysis, you will review all of your written work from the semester so that you may discuss:
• what you have learned about your writing,
• how your writing has improved,
• how you will apply what you have learned in future classes, and
• what you will continue to work on to improve your writing.

You will write a brief essay in which you explain these points using specific examples from your previously graded papers. (Your own writing becomes source material for your essay.) Your analysis must accomplish three things:

1. Describe three or four concrete ways in which your writing has improved. Find an example of your writing from early in the semester that you can compare to your later work. Explain what about the more recent example is an improvement over the first. Discuss the process you went through to develop your writing in these particular ways.
2. Explain how you will apply what you have learned in future classes. Yes, this exercise is a bit hypothetical, but this college course is designed to benefit you in all of your coursework, so it is important for you to consider how your new skills might apply in future educational scenarios.
3. Finally, identify and discuss the writing skills and concepts you would like to develop further as you progress at the university.

Some of the writing concepts to consider as you read through your portfolio are:
• summary
• synthesis (combining other people’s words and ideas)
• overall paper structure
• paragraph development
• sentence structure
• thesis writing and placement
• research and citation
• “representing the conversation”

Of course, you are not limited to this list, and you should discuss anything that you feel is relevant to your writing.
As was true with the literacy narrative, the introduction and analysis need to be detailed and specific, and they should connect all of the details in a common discussion.

Develop a Proposal for a Stress Reduction Program focused on Communication

Warm-up Activity 3.1
Your text presents assertiveness in communication as a solution to reducing stress by effectively communicating one’s needs and one’s position to others. Successful communication, however, is communication that invokes shared meanings to communicate a message. Communicating assertively is only one way of communicating. Is it realistic to expect that we can communicate with all coworkers and friends using the same communication style, regardless of their gender, age, work role, or ethnic background? Working in a culturally diverse environment and as global citizens whose work may involve contact with people from different countries and cultures may necessitate considering various communication style. Browse this week’s resources to become familiar with the communication styles of various ethnic groups in the US and around the world, and to learn more about what are “typically” American communication styles.

Assignment

Is communication a one–size-fits-all proposition? Is there a “best” way to communicate? Is assertiveness necessarily the best way to communicate effectively with others to prevent stress? In this assignment you will consider these issues in the context of a fictional scenario.

Imagine that you have been called in as a health consultant to a small company. The company on site doctor reports that many employees come to him with stress related problems such as insomnia, tension headaches, stomach upsets, and mild depression. You schedule a meeting with representatives of each department and feel a definite tension in the air. Some people are sullen, and sulk through the meeting without saying a word. Others communicate aggressively, blaming other departments for company problems and increasing stress. A few people try to communicate their ideas calmly, but seem misunderstood by others.

You decide the first place to start in a stress reduction problem focused on communication. For this assignment, prepare a proposal for a communication training course that you would offer at this company. Your proposal should include:
1.A description of the type of communication training you will offer in your course (assertiveness only or multicultural), and a justification of that choice.
2.A two-page handout that you plan to give to the participants explaining principles of clear and effective communication
3.A description of the training itself, including any exercises or scenarios you would ask the participants to carry out.
4.A list of at least four additional print or online resources that the participants can access after the course for more information.

In addition to the resources you gather for the proposal, support your proposal with at least three scholarly resources. Other appropriate scholarly resources, including older articles, may be included.

Length: 6-8 pages including the 2-page handout. (Not including title and reference pages.)

Your paper should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts that are presented in the course and provide new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards. Be sure to adhere to Northcentral University’s Academic Integrity Policy.
