Capital Assets—Lease versus Purchase Analysis.

Healthcare organizations face the challenge of acquiring capital to finance equipment purchases. As the Director of Rehabilitation Services in a hospital outpatient clinic, you have identified the need to acquire new isokinetic exercise equipment. You are preparing a briefing for the Assistant Administrator to discuss lease options versus purchase options for an exercise equipment system that would cost $25,000 to purchase. The useful life of the equipment is 5 years.

Based on your analysis of the scenario, the module readings, Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, address the following:

  • Describe different leasing options.
  • Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of lease versus purchase.
  • Make a decision about lease or purchase and present that option to the Assistant Administrator.
  • Summarize the central factors that shaped your decision to recommend lease or purchase.

Write a 3–5-page report in Word format. Utilize a minimum of 2–3 scholarly sources in your research. Your paper should be clear, concise, and organized; demonstrate ethical scholarship in accurate representation and attribution of sources; and display accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

Accounting.

Q1

Discuss the risks faced by the firm. Evaluate the risk management measures available to the firm.

Go to a website on cafeteria plans. What components can be included in a cafeteria plan? What types of employee compensation plans do you recommend for the company that you are evaluating?

Q2

9-35 (Objectives 9-6, 9-7, 9-8) Whitehead, CPA, is planning the audit of a newly obtained client, Henderson Energy Corporation, for the year ended December 31, 2011. Henderson Energy is regulated by the state utility commission and because it is a publicly traded company the audited financial statements must be filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Henderson Energy is considerably more profitable than many of its competitors, largely due to its extensive investment in information technologies used in its energy distribution and other key business processes. Recent growth into rural markets, however, has placed some strain on 2011 operations. Additionally, Henderson Energy expanded its investments into speculative markets and is also making greater use of derivative and hedging transactions to mitigate some of its investment risks. Because of the complexities of the underlying accounting associated with these activities, Henderson Energy added several highly experienced accountants within its financial reporting team. Internal audit, which has direct reporting responsibility to the audit committee, is also actively involved in reviewing key accounting assumptions and estimates on a quarterly basis.

Whitehead’s discussions with the predecessor auditor revealed that the client has experienced some difficulty in correctly tracking existing property, plant, and equipment items. This largely involves equipment located at its multiple energy production facilities. During the recent year, Henderson acquired a regional electric company, which expanded the number of energy production facilities.

Whitehead plans to staff the audit engagement with several members of the firm who have experience in auditing energy and public companies. The extent of partner review of key accounts will be extensive.

Required

Based on the above information, identify factors that affect the risk of material misstatement in the December 31, 2011 financial statements of Henderson Energy. Indicate whether the factor increases or decreases the risk of material misstatement. Also, identify which audit risk model component is affected by the factor. Use the format below:

Factor                           Effect on the Risk of Material Misstatement         Audit Risk Model Component

Henderson is a new client                Increases                                                   Inherent risk

Q3

We have the very well-known audit risk model this week. Let us start by discussing the meaning of: planned detection risk, inherent risk, control risk, acceptable audit risk. Can you give some examples?

Q4

Section 404 of SOX requires that the management of a public company issue a report on internal control over financial reporting (ICFR) as of the end of the company’s fiscal year. Many companies have reported that their ICFR was operating effectively, whereas others have reported that such controls were not effective in design or operation. Companies issue their reports on ICFR through filings with the SEC.

Visit the SEC website [http://www.sec.gov] and answer the following questions.

  1. Use EDGAR to search for Tri-Valley Corporation (TVC) and Monarch Staffing Inc. Find TVC’s 10-K and Monarch’s 10-KSB for the year ended 12-31-06.
  2. Did either company report material weaknesses in ICFR? If so, what were the weaknesses?

Q5

The internal control framework developed by COSO represents a huge milestone in auditing internal controls for public companies and the Federal Government. COSO Framework includes five so-called components of internal control. What are these components? What do they mean to us auditors?

Short Essay: Exploring the Self, Cultures, History, or Religion Through Myth.

Write a letter to a younger relative or one of your children that explains one or several aspects of your life story, personality, biography, or family life in the form of a myth that we have explored during this course. The trick here is to mythologize part of your life. In other words, write a myth that could be interpreted. Then, write a paper on the interpretation of your myth using what you have learned about myths during this course.

Joseph Campbell’s “cycle of adventure” can provide useful guidance in structuring your personal history.

Epistemology and Philosophy.

You will compose only one reflection paper for this section on Epistemology and Philosophy of Religion.  In your reflection paper, you should connect the particular film with one or more of the philosophical arguments and/or theories from the same section of the course.

Your reflection paper should be 2-3 pages in length, and it needs to be typed and double-spaced and submitted through Blackboard.  It should have your name at the top of the page.  You also should title your reflection in a way that gives the reader an idea of where your reflection leads.  For example: if you write a reflection paper on the movie Marley and Me, then you might title it: “Can a Pet Be a Friend for a Childless Couple?”

Manchester United Soccer Club.

Nicolette Larson was loading the dishwasher with her husband, Kevin, and telling
him about the first meeting of the Manchester United Tournament Organizing
Committee. Nicolette, a self-confessed “soccer mom,” had been elected tournament director and was responsible for organizing the club’s first summer
tournament.
Manchester United Soccer Club (MUSC) located in Manchester, New Hampshire,
was formed in 1992 as a way of bringing recreational players to a higher level of
competition and preparing them for the State Olympic Development Program
and/or high school teams. The club currently has 24 boys and girls (ranging in
age from under 9 to 16) on teams affiliated with the Hampshire Soccer Association and the Granite State Girls Soccer League. The club’s board of directors
decided in the fall to sponsor a summer invitational soccer tournament to generate revenue. Given the boom in youth soccer, hosting summer tournaments has
become a popular method for raising funds. MUSC teams regularly compete in
three to four tournaments each summer at different locales in New England.
These tournaments have been reported to generate between $50,000 and $70,000
for the host club.
MUSC needs additional revenue to refurbish and expand the number of soccer
fields at the Rock Rimmon soccer complex. Funds would also be used to augment
the club’s scholarship program, which provides financial aid to players who cannot afford the $450 annual club dues.
Nicolette gave her husband a blow-by-blow account of what transpired during
the first tournament committee meeting that night. She started the meeting by
having everyone introduce themselves and by proclaiming how excited she was
that the club was going to sponsor its own tournament. She then suggested that
the committee brainstorm what needed to be done to pull off the event; she would
record their ideas on a flipchart.
What emerged was a free-for-all of ideas and suggestions. One member
immediately stressed the importance of having qualified referees and spent
several minutes describing in detail how his son’s team was robbed in a poorly
officiated championship game. This was followed by other stories of injustice
on the soccer field. Another member suggested that they needed to quickly
contact the local colleges to see if they could use their fields. The committee
spent more than 30 minutes talking about how they should screen teams and
how much they should charge as an entry fee. An argument broke out over
whether they should reward the winning teams in each age bracket with medals
or trophies. Many members felt that medals were too cheap, while others
thought the trophies would be too expensive. Someone suggested that they seek
local corporate sponsors to help fund the tournament. The proposed sale of
tournament T-shirts and sweatshirts was followed by a general critique of the
different shirts parents had acquired at different tournaments. One member
advocated that they recruit an artist he knew to develop a unique silk-screen
design for the tournament. The meeting adjourned 30 minutes late with only
half of the members remaining until the end. Nicolette drove home with seven
sheets of ideas and a headache.

As Kevin poured a glass of water for the two aspirin Nicolette was about to
take, he tried to comfort her by saying that organizing this tournament would be
a big project not unlike the projects he works on at his engineering and design
firm. He offered to sit down with her the next night and help her plan the project.
He suggested that the first thing they needed to do was to develop a WBS for the
project.
1. Make a list of the major deliverables for the project and use them to develop a
draft of the work breakdown structure for the tournament that contains at
least three levels of detail. What are the major deliverables associated with
hosting an event such as a soccer tournament?
2. How would developing a WBS alleviate some of the problems that occurred
during the first meeting and help Nicolette organize and plan the project?
3. Where can Nicolette find additional information to help her develop a WBS for
the tournament?
4. How could Nicolette and her task force use the WBS to generate cost estimates
for the tournament? Why would this be useful information?

Literary Analysis.

Why Write a Literary Analysis?

Literature teaches us about the value of conflict. We experience conflict in our personal relationships and in our interactions with society. Literary analysis helps us recognize the conflict at work in literature, which gives us greater insight into the personal conflicts that we face. In addition, learning how to closely read, analyze, and critique a text is beneficial beyond a literature course in that it improves our writing, reading, and critiquing abilities overall.

How to Write a Literary Analysis

It is important to understand that some conflicts in literature might not always be obvious. Considering how an author addresses conflict via literary techniques can reveal other more complex conflicts or different kinds of conflicts that interact in multiple ways. Analyzing those more complicated elements can help you discover what literature represents about the human experience and condition. With this in mind, consider that your thesis might be a claim about how two pieces make similar representations, or it can show two different points of view on a similar issue.

The literary analysis should be organized around your thesis (argument), which is the controlling idea of the entire essay. In the Week Three assignment, you identified two conflicts and created an initial thesis statement in relation to two of the literary works from the List of Literary Works. In this assignment, you will refine that thesis even further and build on your overall argument utilizing the literary techniques below. Reflect on feedback from your Instructor and peers in previous weeks to help you revise your rough draft into a final paper.

For this literary analysis, write a 1250- to 1600-word essay in which you do the following:

  • Revise/develop the thesis from Week Three based on the feedback you have received. Again, the thesis should focus on the conflict(s) you chose to write about. This thesis should provide deeper insight into the possible meanings surrounding the chosen conflict(s) that you see in the chosen literary texts. Throughout your analysis, you must use at least two primary sources and two sources from the Ashford University Library to support your thesis. Watch the ENG125 Literature Research video (Transcript) for help with finding sources from the library for your paper.
  • Review and incorporate instructor and classroom feedback on at least one conflict listed in Types of Conflict Found in Literature from two literary works in this course. One of the literary works must be a short story. See the List of Literary Works and Types of Conflict Found in Literature.
  • Analyze three literary techniques to help define and draw out the conflict(s) chosen.
  • Explain how the texts utilize the literary techniques below to describe the conflict(s).
  • Compare and contrast the two texts you chose.

List of Literary Works

For your Literary Analysis, select at least two works from the List of Literary Works that share the same type(s) of conflict(s). Remember, one of them must be a short story. You can either compare two short stories, a short story and a poem, or a short story and a play.

List of Types of Conflicts Found in Literature

In the document Types of Conflicts Found in Literature, you will find a list of possible conflicts to explore in your Literary Analysis. Please note that you must write about one of the conflicts in the list of literary texts provided. To help you better understand each conflict and how it might be apparent, examples from popular culture have been provided. However, please note that your Literary Analysis must not be about popular culture, television, or movies. The examples provided are just that–examples. Please also note that it is possible for a text to have more than one conflict at work. The repeated references to conflicts in The Simpsons provide further context on how multiple conflicts might be present in a single work. Other examples of conflict are also provided.

List of Literary Techniques

In your analysis, address at least three of the literary techniques (as defined in Chapters 2 and 4) listed in the document Literary Techniques, describing their relationships with the conflict(s)–which provide deeper insight into possible meaning(s) found in literature–you are addressing in your paper.

Assignment Requirements

  • Topic: Your paper must address two of the texts, at least one of the conflicts, and three of the literary techniques as listed in the guidelines.
  • Length: Your paper must be double spaced and 1250 to 1600 words in length (excluding title and references pages).
  • Sources: You must utilize at least two primary sources to support your thesis (including the course text) and at least two scholarly sources from the Ashford University Library (at least four sources in total). You may also use other academic sources acquired from other classes that pertain to the literary theme and/or conflict.
  • Elements of Academic Writing: Please see the Guide to Writing a Compare/Contrast Essay resource, which provides information regarding how to effectively organize this essay.
  • APA: Your assignment must be formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
    • Separate Title Page: Must include a separate title page that lists the following: an original title, your name, date of submission, and the professor’s name.
    • Separate Reference Page: At the end of your paper, include a separate references page that lists all sources utilized for and cited within your analysis.
    • Proper Citations: All sources must be properly cited according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center, both within the text of your paper and on the references page.
