What management practices or policies would you put into place to avoid a legal dispute over FMLA, such as the one in this case?

  • Complete an Internet search for the case Spangler v. Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines.
  • Read the case and consider the presented facts.
  • Write a paper of approximately 750 words that answers the following questions:
    • What are the employer’s obligations under the FMLA?
    • What are an employee’s obligations when attempting to take leave under the FMLA?
    • What management practices or policies would you put into place to avoid a legal dispute over FMLA, such as the one in this case?
  • Include a minimum of two sources, which may consist of readings from the University Library, your text, or other selections.
  • Format your paper using West Writing Style Handbook guidelines.

Analyze what you are learning, compare and contrast new information with previously learned information, question discrepancies, notice new questions that arise, synthesize ideas by reflecting on information learned from various sources, assess the relative strengths and weaknesses of various points of view, ‘talk back’ to your sources, decide what you need to do next.

The key to this assignment is examination of the topic from different perspectives, actively seeking opposing or alternate points of view to analyze, compare, contrast, synthesize and evaluate. This is the dialectic process. Remember, you do not need to come to a conclusion or take a stand; in fact, you must avoid taking a firm position. You can and should say if you find one position more logical, easier to believe, or in some way more desirable than another, just don’t declare that position to be the right or best one. Instead, keep your mind open to additional questions, contradictions and complexities that may arise in the course of your research.

Your research log should includes dates and all the necessary reference information for each source, an annotation of the information you found in that source, and your thoughts and reflections, showing how your thinking was influenced by what you learned and what you did next.

Exploratory Research Log and Paper

These are the requirements:

  1. Keep a research log.
    1. Your research log must show at least 10 sources including at least two articles from one or more databases and at least one scholarly article. (The scholarly article can be from a database, thus also fulfilling one database source requirement.)
    2. Each source must be properly cited according to APA documentation style. The log will be turned in with your paper.
  1. Do research to examine your question, problem or issue from a variety of perspectives.
  1. Write an exploratory paper of 850-1000 words and present it according to the format guidelines in your syllabus.
  1. In your paper explain your chosen question, problem or issue and why you are interested in it and have not, as yet, reached a satisfactory answer or position (your starting point).
  1. Write a first-person, chronologically organized, narrative account of your thinking process as you did your research. Do not simply report on what you found, but show evidence of a dialectic process in which you think about what you are learning. It is not necessary to arrive at a satisfactory answer, but you must show how your thinking has evolved.
  1. Use appropriate APA documentation style for in-text citations.

Study findings relative your research question (Drug Addiction and Criminal Behavior)(positive, negative, and inconclusive

The next step in the research process is immersing oneself in the empirical literature on your research topic to determine the extent to which your research question (identified in Module 1) has been addressed. To this end, please use the Trident University Online Library to conduct a literature search on your research topic.

Remember, your goal is to discover the extent to which a knowledge gap exists with regard to your specific research question. Locate five peer-reviewed journal articles that present studies relevant to your topic, and synthesize these into a four-page paper that summarizes the “current state of knowledge” with regard to your research question. Note specifically,

  1. Study findings relative your research question (Drug Addiction and Criminal Behavior)(positive, negative, and inconclusive)
  2. Any additional questions left unanswered by these studies
  3. How addressing your research question would help to fill a knowledge gap (should your research question fall short of this, you may need to propose an alternative one)
  4. The specific population to which your study will apply (and ultimately, your study’s targeted sample)
  • You are expected to consult the scholarly literature in preparing your paper; you are also expected to incorporate relevant background readings.
  • Your paper should be written in your own words. This will enable me to assess your level of understanding.
  • In order to earn full credit, you must clearly show that you have read ALL required background materials.
  • Be sure to cite your references in the text of all papers and on the reference list at the end. For examples, look at the way the references are listed in the modules and on the background reading list.
  • Proofread your paper to be sure grammar and punctuation are correct and that each part of the assignment has been address clearly and completely.

Distinguish between short-range (less than five years) and long-range (over five years) effects of the policy.

n this course, you have learned that social policies are formulated to solve social problems considered important by a mass of voters, media, and political actors. Social policy is but one solution to the problem—not necessarily the most rational, effective, or socially just. Social policies are human creations and, as such, can be changed. In this paper you will analyze a social policy as a tool for social justice.

Research one social welfare policy using your textbook, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet.

Analyze the policy and address the following:

The social problem addressed by the policy

  1. What is/are the problem/s to be solved in the most fundamental terms?
  2. What is the history of the problem/s in the United States?
  3. What are the various theories about the causes of the problem/s? Based on this, what do you think is/are the most important causes/s of the problem/s?

The policy objectives, value premises, expectation, and target populations

  1. Policy objectives—overt and covert objectives: What are the stated objectives of the policy? In your judgment, what are the covert objectives of the policy?
  2. What are the values underlying the policy objectives? What values are revealed by the overt and covert objectives?
  3. What did the policymakers expect would be the result of the policy?
  4. Target segments of the population at whom policy is aimed: Discuss the direct target of the policy in terms of size and other demographic characteristics. Who are the indirect targets of the policy?

Effects of the policy

  1. Intended effects: What effects did the lawmakers intend?
  2. Unintended effects: What effects did the lawmakers not foresee?
  3. Distinguish between short-range (less than five years) and long-range (over five years) effects of the policy.

Implications of the Policy

  1. Changes in the distribution of material resources: Are there any changes to the distribution of material resources, including income and other tangible benefits, as a result of the policy for direct or indirect target groups?
  2. Changes in distribution of services, rights, and statuses: Are there any changes in services, rights, or statuses as a result of the policy?

Alternative Policies

  1. What alternative policy/policies would more effectively address the social problem discussed in the policy analysis while advancing social justice?

Write a 4–6-page paper in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Make sure to include research in addition to the textbook from credible, scholarly sources.

write a cohesive discussion of the research article that addresses the questions above.

Goals

The purpose of this assignment is to familiarize you with scientific terminology and current issues in oceanography, and to strengthen your written communication skills through critical reading and critical analysis of a recent oceanography article.

Reading Critically and Writing Critical Reviews

Critical reading means more than just skimming the subheadings an article or highlighting terminology. Critical reading means taking the time to think carefully about what is being said in an article. It involves identifying key ideas like the author’s argument, the evidence being used to support it. Critical reading means that you do not take what you read as absolute fact; instead, you analyze and evaluate the credibility of the article.

Critical reviews are based on specific criteria used to evaluate the article. Your goal in a critical review is to highlight some of the key points of the article, but not necessarily summarize the entire article. Some opinion is used in critical reviews, but it is opinion that is educated by your knowledge and experience with the topic. All opinion in a critical review should be substantiated and supported with evidence from the article and possibly from other sources.

The Writing Assignment

For this writing assignment, you will choose and read ONE of the articles listed below. These articles come from Scientific American, a magazine that presents scientific research to the popular science audience. Look at each of these articles and decide which one most interests you. If the links below do not work for you (likely, if you are trying to access them off-campus), a PDF of each article is posted to the Canvas Assignments page for W1.

How Kitty is Killing the Dolphins Meltdown in the North

Reviving Dead Zones Storm of the Century

The Oceans Invisible Forest The Threat of Silent Earthquakes

Once you have finished reading ONE article from the list above, you will write a researched, critical review of the article in an organized, coherent essay that addresses the following writing prompts:

• The Problem: What problem does this article seek to explain and solve? Why should someone care enough about that problem to read this paper? What are the implications of the problem to the average world citizen?

• The Science: What is the “science” of the article? How were data obtained? What data and observations are discussed? What oceanography technology is described in the article? How does the “science” of the article support the author’s argument?

• Organization: How is the text organized? Is the publication organized logically? Are the main points clearly presented? Do you find the text easy to read, or is it stilted or choppy? Is the author’s argument repetitive?

• Presentation: How did the author use graphics and figures to convey their topic? Do you think these figures were effective? What was the most compelling figure of the article? Why was this particular figure most relevant to the article?

• Conclusions: What are the articles main conclusions? Do you agree with these conclusions? Can you think of other ways to solve, research, or investigate the problem?

This article review should not be a simple summary; you should think about what you read and write a cohesive discussion of the research article that addresses the questions above. To answer the questions, you should integrate at least two (2) outside, primary sources (in addition to the article you chose) and cite them in MLA format both in- text and in a Works Cited. These should be sources beyond your module content and textbook. Do not directly copy sentences from texts, scientific papers, or other sources without proper citations.

Explain the Role of Federal Rules and Regulations Before Organizations can be Attempted

ou have just been hired as the Assistant Director of Labor Relations for a 400-bed hospital, employing nearly 3,000 employees, of which 800 are registered nurses. The hospital is the largest hospital in the town of 102,000, competing with two other hospitals for scarce healthcare talent. You watch anxiously as the not-for-profit facility on the east side of town is under pressure from the Service Employees International Union (SEIU)-Healthcare to unionize based on wages and staffing ratios. You have been asked by the Chief Labor Counsel for your opinion on the next course of action for the hospital. Since your hospital is a non-profit healthcare institution, it is important to know the guidelines that not-for-profit organizations may encounter versus for-profit companies.

In a paper, address the following:

  1. Determine the key federal rules and regulations that must be known by managers before the organizing is attempted by the SEIU.
  2. Discuss the impact on profit and not-for-profit organizing efforts and consideration.
  3. What rules must the hospital consider when providing access to employees regarding their right to meet to organize?
  4. Compose a strategic plan to prepare managers for a potential organizing attempt by the SEIU.
  5. Address how these work related laws affect both employers and employees. Provide specific examples and recommendations within your plan.
  6. Conclude your paper with a recommendation if the hospital should look into organizing with SEIU and justify your reasoning.

Support your paper with a minimum of three resources, which may include your required text. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including older articles, may be included.

Length: 5-7 pages, not including title and reference pages

Your paper should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards.

Explain at least three causes of the Great Depression and the specific, corresponding New Deal programs meant to respond to those causes.

  • Prepare: Read Chapter 7 of the textbook. Find a primary source from the 1920s that is related to the group that you chose for your Final Project and that you can use in your Final Project. You may use one of the primary sources listed this week, or you may find your own.Watch the Credibility: Critical Thinking video, and then use the Library of Congress Primary Source Analysis Tool to help you think about and understand your primary source.

*Note: Remember that a primary source is an artifact or document created at the time of an event or by someone who personally witnessed the event. Please review the handouts, Types of Sources and Primary Sources.

Reflect: The 1920s was a decade of significant social change and social conflict. Consider the sources of social change that occurred in the 1920s, how those changes affected the group that you chose for your Final Project, and what long-term effect those changes had. Reflect on how the event represented in your primary source relates to the larger social transformations going on. Think back on the video you watched, and think about the guidelines for credibility outlined in it. How credible is your primary source?

Write: Based on information from your textbook and your analysis of the primary source you chose, answer the following:

    • Why do you think the event was important, and how does it fit into the conflict and changes of the 1920s?
    • How does the event you chose relate to your Final Project topic?
    • What does the primary source you chose tell you about this topic?
    • What does it not tell you?

Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length. Support your claims with examples from the required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references. Your references and citations must be formatted according to APA style as outlined by the Ashford Writing Center.

repare: Read Chapters 8 and 9 of the textbook and watch the World War II: Breadlines to Boomtimes video.

Reflect: The Great Depression and World War II represented tumultuous years for Americans. From the widespread and appalling poverty of the Great Depression to the horror and excitement of World War II, consider the ways that Americans were forced to work together for the good of each other and the nation. Think about how the experiences of these years, both the good and the bad, forever changed the Americans who lived through them. Consider the changes that the United States went through from the Great Depression through World War II. Reflect on the specific causes of the Great Depression and the New Deal programs that the Roosevelt Administration created to address each one.

Write: Based on information from your textbook and your analysis of the primary source you chose, address the following points:

    • Explain at least three causes of the Great Depression and the specific, corresponding New Deal programs meant to respond to those causes.
    • How did the societal changes of this period affect the group that you chose for your Final Project?

Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length. Be sure to mention your chosen group in the subject line of your post. Support your claims with examples from the required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references. Your references and citations must be formatted according to APA style as outlined by the Ashford Writing Center.

Native Americans is my topic for my Final Paper

NOTE: Must use

Ethics are the moral principles that one person or group of people follow.Disuss.

For this week, discuss your thoughts on the following ethical dilemma: You work in HR at a major consulting firm and one of the consultants comes to you and says that he cannot in good faith take an assignment at the Philip Morris company because they make products that kill people. How would you handle the situation? Once you have posted your response, respond to at least two other students.

First response

  • Ethics are the moral principles that one person or group of people follow. Much like culture, I believe ethics are determined by the society in which we live and the norms, ideas, and beliefs of the culture that we were raised in or live in. What may be defined as unethical to one person or group may be totally acceptable to another. Judgements for ethical dilemmas are also based on personal experiences. My opinion about a situation may be slightly different from another person’s even though we share the same views about ethical behavior.

The consultant has their own personal choice to take an assignment or position at any company. I don’t mean to sound blunt, but everyone has the freedom in America to work where ever they wish. In the end, I would see if any other consultant would be willing to trade assignment with the employee so that the employee doesn’t feel like they have to go against their values. I would also try to remind the consultant of the good things that Philip Morris does; whether it be community service, donating to charitable causes, or providing thousands of jobs, overall decreasing the amount of unemployment in the area.

Second response

This seems to be an easy problem to fix. If that person feels that strongly about it, then they need to speak to their supervisor. There is a chance, depending on the supervisor, employee base, and the employee themselves, that they will simply be reassigned. However, the supervisor may tell them they have no choice in the matter, and that they will either take the assignment, or seek employment elsewhere. If the employee is unwilling or unable to complete the assigned duty, someone else is there that will. If a person’s ethics and/or morals will not allow them to complete their tasks, they need to make that known so that the quality of the work, and how it reflects on the company, is not damaged. They may also be further informed of their scope of work, and which particular area of the company they will be consulting. With a company as large as Phillip Morgan, it is possible they will not be involved in either the tobacco or tobacco support industry. Essentially, it all comes back to what that employee is willing to do.
