1. Title Page Your title should indicate the subject of the report. For purposes of this class, put your name, date and title of report on a cover page. Do not put your name on any other page of the report. The title should provide a description of your report. Examples Effect of Enzyme Concentration A more descriptive title might be: The Effect of Peroxidase Concentration on Reaction Rate The individual scanning article titles has a better idea if this is something that is pertinent to the research he/she is doing. Example Titles for another Experiment: Osmosis Using Dialysis Tubing Dialysis, Osmosis, and Diffusion A more descriptive and accurate title might be: Demonstration of Diffusion by Use of a Semi-Permeable Membrane The descriptive titles are mini-summaries of the entire experiment. 2. The Abstract The purpose of the abstract is to provide a brief summary of the experiment. It includes pertinent information about the experimental procedure as well as significant findings of the research. Scientists read this part of the paper to determine their interest in the research work. After reading an abstract, the reader should be able to understand (1) the purpose of the study, (2) the methods used to carry out the experiment, (3) results obtained, and (4) conclusions. Your abstract should follow the cover page, and be written on a separate page from the rest of the report. 3. Introduction The introduction provides background information, including an explanation of the area being investigated. Why is the problem of interest? What previous research has been done in the area of interest? What is the significance of the research being reported? The introduction should present the hypothesis of the experiment as well as currently published research supporting or disproving the hypothesis. Distinguish between the hypothesis and the experiment you are performing to test the hypothesis. Writing a proper introduction requires that you do some reading before beginning the experiment. For example, if you are going to test the effect of enzyme concentration on reaction rate, you want to know and understand how enzymes function. If peroxidase is the enzyme being tested, you want to understand the purpose or function of peroxidase, and where you would find this enzyme. Is it present in all biological systems? In very rare situations? The answer to these two questions certainly affects the significance of the experiment and its results. 4. Materials and Methods This section should contain a precise description of the materials being used to carry out the experiment, the setup, including the experimental design, and procedures being used in the experiment. If any of the procedures are your developments, they should be covered in detail. If you are using a procedure already developed, you need to site the source of the procedure, and explain, in detail, any modifications to the procedure. You should also explain what sort of statistical analysis was used in analyzing your results. 5. Results and Discussion Some laboratory reports combine Results and Discussion into a single section. For purposes of this course, combine the two sections. Some instructors prefer to see the two as separate sections of your laboratory report. Similarly, some published research papers (journal articles) require the scientist to combine the two sections; others require two separate sections as part of their format. In either format, the Results section includes the data, and the Discussion section talks about the significance of that data. Results What were the findings of your experiment? Present your results in logical order. YOUR RESULTS SHOULD BE AVERAGES AND MEASURES OF VARIATION. DO NOT REPORT RAW DATA. The results section of your laboratory report consists of the data compiled as part of the research project. Results are often compiled in tabular form or as figures. This type of presentation is often easier to interpret, and facilitates comparison of data. You need to report your data in paragraph form as well as in tables and/or figures. The tables and figures should stand alone, i.e. not require your reader to read the text as well. You include these to supplement the text portion of the results, not to replace them. Discuss statistics and their application in this section. If you present results in the form of tables and graphs, they should be numbered in order of discussion. In the text, when you are discussing your results, you refer to table _ or figure _. Discussion Interpret your results. How do they compare with previously reported results? Do you accept or reject your hypothesis based on your results and other literature? Do you have a revised or an alternative hypothesis? Include any conclusions reached that are based on the experimental data you have just presented. Explain your results. Do they support previous research? Do they contradict previous research. If so, you need to be able to explain why. Are the results explained by the current research, and supported by evidence from previous studies? If any of the results are surprising, is there a reasonable explanation provided? Example. Students performed an experiment where they looked at the Effect of Enzyme Concentration Versus Rate of Reaction. You would normally expect the rate of reaction to increase as enzyme concentration increases because there are more enzyme molecules to do the job. The enzyme concentrations tested were .5, 1.0, and 2.0 ml of enzyme. Reaction rates were .25, .82, and .83, respectively, for increasing enzyme concentrations. There was a large increase in rate between the .5 ml and 1.0 ml of enzyme. How do you explain the fact that there was essentially no increase in reaction rate when enzyme concentration was doubled from 1.0 to 2.0 ml? If substrate (the substance on which the enzyme reacts to form product) concentration is extremely low, additional enzyme will not speed up the rate of the reaction. Many of the enzyme molecules are not working because there is no substrate with which they can react. And there is a logical explanation for your results. What questions or gaps remain in our understanding of the subject matter following the presentation of the research results? The results and discussion section of a scientific paper explains how the results of the research project contribute to our understanding of the topic, and discusses future directions for the research that might help fill in the gaps. 6. References List all sources of information used in the paper. Any resources you used to learn more background information or that gave you ideas for your hypothesis as well as supporting and contradicting information for your results and discussion should be included in your references. All references must be cited in your paper and vice versa. All references cited should be alphabetized by the surname of the first author, and follow MLA format: Author(s). Year. Title of article. Journal name, Volume, pages. This is the same format that should be used in submitting any writing assignment. For example: Moliterno, D.J., R.A. Lange, R.D. Gerard, J.E. Willard, C. I mean for you to take the time to listen to these on Youtube. I am not saying you will like all three, but one or two of them I am sure you will. Read them several times, listen to them, and then answer the Discussion Board questions and discussions. As always be certain to reply to other students’ posts.
First, which poem did you like the best? Why? What is “Not Waving but  Drowning” (p. 458) about? If you watched the Youtube video did this help at all?  In Brooks’ poem, she is writing about an attitude. What is the attitude she is writing about? Can you find that attitude today? Where?  Are there words in Brooks’ poem you might have to look up? “Harlem” has always been a very popular poem. What is the mood conveyed by the poem? Do the words or images help create that mood? 2. This week read Sylvia Plath’s “Daddy” in our textbook and then go to Youtube and view and listen to Plath herself reading her poem “Daddy.” Then while there listen to oliviam16 read Plath’s poem “Mirror.” After you are finished, return to the Discussion here and answer the following questions:

Application: Civil Evaluations

There are various types of forensic psychology evaluations that are helpful in issues germane to the civil courts. Some issues relevant to civil court proceedings include child custody issues, issues assessed by independent medical examinations (IMEs), competency issues of all types (i.e., competency to handle one’s financial affairs, competency to execute a will, etc.), and issues centered around civil commitment. In this Application you explore types of evaluations utilized in civil court proceedings, as well as the different reasons why and methods by which forensic psychology evaluations are performed.

To prepare for this assignment:

• Review the assigned chapters in your course text Psychological Evaluations for the Courts. Pay particular attention to the psychological evaluations that are applicable to civil courts and when you would use each.
• Review the article “Assessing Decisional Capacity for Clinical Research or Treatment: A Review of Instruments,” and focus on the different evaluations used for assessing capacity to consent.
• Select three types of civil forensic psychology evaluations that are of interest to you.
• Think about the similarities and differences of the evaluations you selected, as well as when and why you would use each.

The assignment: (1–3 pages)

• Compare (similarities and differences) the three civil forensic psychology evaluations you selected.
• Then explain when you would use each evaluation and why.
• Finally, explain what insights you had or conclusions you drew based on your comparison.
