Assignment 1: Description of Research Methodology

Due Week 2 and worth 150 points

In this assignment, you will write an essay about the research methods and ethical implications of a social psychology study. You will get information about the study from one of the entries in the SPARQ “Solutions Catalog”, which is a web site maintained by Stanford University at https://sparq.stanford.edu/solutions?&&. SPARQ is an acronym for “Social Psychological Answers to Real-world Questions.” Each entry in the Solutions Catalog names a problem, and then offers a solution to that problem, based on a research study in social psychology.

To keep this assignment short and manageable, your only sources for this assignment should be from the SPARQ site and your course materials, such as your textbook. There is no need for you to cite any of the course materials. Therefore, no additional citations or references are needed, beyond those from the SPARQ site.

In this exercise, you will choose one of the entries in the SPARC site, and then write a two to three (2-3) page paper that meets the following requirements.

  1. Begin your paper with a short introductory statement that clearly identifies the article from the SPARQ site that you are using, as well as the corresponding research article.  Model your statement after the following example:
The article I selected from the SPARQ website is entitled “Boost Grades by Reframing Failures” (Wilson, n.d.), which summarizes a research article (Wilson & Linville, 1982) on the topic.
      • Please note that there are two APA “in-text citations” in this example. The first citation “(Wilson, n.d.)” is an in-text citation for the SPARQ article. The SPARQ articles are undated, which means that there is no date of publication reported. The “n.d.” designation is an abbreviation for “no date”.
      • The second citation “(Wilson & Linville, 1982)”, is an in-text citation to the original research article. We are asking you to cite this paper for practice in using APA, but are not requiring you to read the original paper. Normally, you should cite only those articles that you actually read and used, but we’re making an exception here for the purposes of practice.
  1. Briefly summarize the main details of your chosen social psychology research study. Identify the main research method(s) used in the study (e.g., case study, experiment, observation, etc.).
  2. Explain whether or not you believe the research methodology that the researchers used in the study was the most appropriate for the study. Provide a rationale for your response.
  3. Discuss whether or not you believe the research methodology used in the study is the one (1) method that provides researchers with the most information in general. Explain the main reasons why or why not.
  4. Explain the major ethical implications of the selected study (e.g., informed consent, debriefing, etc.). Describe the main reasons why you believe the study was or was not ethical. Provide a rationale for your response.
  5. The final section of your paper will be a reference section that contains a corresponding reference for both of the in-text citations in your introductory statement (see point #1, above). In APA-style citations, in-text citations must match up with a reference in the reference section. You can model your reference section after the following:
Wilson, T. D. (n.d.). Boost grades by reframing failures.  Retrieved from https://sparq.stanford.edu/solutions/boost-grades-reframing-failures

Wilson, T. D. & Linville, P.W. (1982).  Improving the academic performance of college freshmen:  attribution therapy revisited.  Journal of Personality and Social Psychology42 (2), 367-376.

      • These examples follow the APA conventions for an Internet article, and a professional journal article, respectively.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Describe research methods that are used for studying social psychology.
  • Develop an increased understanding of the dynamic between society and individuals.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in social psychology.
  • Write clearly and concisely about social psychology using proper grammar and mechanics.

The experiences of the first three years are almost entirely lost to us, and when we attempt to enter into a small child’s world we come as foreigners who have forgotten the landscape and no longer speak the native tongue. – Selama Fraiberg

In the first three years, children are exploring their environments. They enjoy simple actions like banging on the floor with a toy, all the objects, they can reach for, goes in the mouth. They are excited to show their achievements like clapping their hands, point at their body parts, hopping or walking backwards. We fail to understand their world, as we have forgotten and cannot recollect our experience from our memories. It feels like we are learning to understand these young children, as if we never lived those years. The children are learning to express their need by recognize the words, relating to the objects or actions and we are learning with them to understand their needs. Also we are so much focused on hygiene and safety of the child that we do not want the children to put anything in the mouth except for food. We forget that they are learning the motor skills by their action because we are focus on the consequences of their actions.

What’s a Woman Gotta Do (Wear)?

Please answer the following essay question. In responding you should draw on course readingsand relevant content from lectures and videosPresent your response in clear, concise, and non-repetitive language. This exam is fundamentally a test of your ability to digest course content and to apply it to a “real life” context.

While an excellent answer always lives by its own rules, in general, your response should be at least 4-6 paragraphs in length. The exam should be typed, double-spaced (New Times Roman, 12pt font).

What’s a Woman Gotta Do (Wear)?

Actress Jessica Chastain, perhaps best known for her role in the film Zero Dark Thirty, recently called out Hollywood for what she considers to be a sexist double standard that powerfully shapes the portrayal of female superheroes. Concerning this point, she was quoted as saying “If you look at films like Elektra and Aeon Flux, the problem that studios have is that they try to make kick-ass women very sexualized. They have to be in some catsuit.”
As our course readings and discussions have (hopefully) made clear, this is not a new issue. Drawing on (and citing) relevant class materials, please answer the following: 1) give some specific examples of how heroic female characters have been made to fit the “sexualized” paradigm referred to by Chastain. In other words, how have they been “sexed up”?; 2) compare and contrast this seemingly inescapable feminine heroic characteristic with essential aspects of male heroes as commonly depicted (biographies, patterns, archetypes, etc.); 3) lastly, suggest reasons why creators and audiences perpetuate/expect/accept this kind representation of heroines.

Analyze and explain what is being done in the five areas described above (team, job satisfaction, communication, motivation, and stress management) in the company.

Conduct an interview with an employee (preferably a supervisor or manager) at your current job or a previous job. If you have no prior work experience, you may interview a family member or friend who is currently employed.  You have just been promoted to the manager of your department and have been asked to review the following:

  • Value of a team environment: Is the company operating with a team structure?  How effective is the team structure?  How could the company improve the effectiveness of the team environment?  If there is no team structure currently in place, how should one be implemented?
  • Job satisfaction of the employees: Are the employees satisfied or is there a lot of complaining, absenteeism, and turnover?  What could the company be doing to improve job satisfaction?
  • How does the company currently communicate with their employees regarding company changes?  Do they rely on technology for their announcements?  Is this an effective method of communication?
  • Efforts made to motivate your employees: What is being done to motivate the employees? Do employees get regular pay raises?   Is there a rewards program?  Are they being recognized for their accomplishments?  Name at least three things the company could be doing to motivate their employees.
  • Assistance offered in helping your employees to deal with stress management: Are the employees given any tools to deal with stress management?  Does the company have access to mental health counselors?  Are employees given permission to take any mental health days?  What could the company be doing to help employees deal with their employees’ stress?

Prepare a 4 page report that includes an overall assessment of how each of the above is currently being handled and how you would change the system.  Be sure to provide examples and be specific in your reasoning behind your suggested changes.  Utilize at least three scholarly resources in your report (one of which may be your text book). This report must include:

    • Executive Summary
    • Analyze and explain what is being done in the five areas described above (team, job satisfaction,  communication, motivation, and stress management) in the company.
    • Write recommendations for what they could be doing better in all five areas
    • Conclusion
    • Appendix: List of questions asked in interview

The paper must be well organized using headings and subheadings.

The written report must be in APA format, have proper punctuation and grammar, as well as free of typographical error.

All materials used must be cited correctly and listed on a reference page.

Compare and contrast the two selected organizations, and prepare an APA formatted paper that.

Using your current work organization (or an organization of interest) and a second organization in the same industry as the subject matter, research the elements of business, compare and contrast the two selected organizations, and prepare an APA formatted paper that:

  • Analyzes the basic legal, social, and economic environment in which the organizations operate
  • Analyzes the managerial, operational, and financial issues impacting the organizations including:
    • Company Culture and Performance
    • Promotion Policies
    • Strategic Decisions Making
    • Decision-Making Style
    • Management Style
    • Leadership Style
    • Communication Style
    • Use of SWOT Tool
    • Operations Strategy Framework
  • Analyzes the impact of potential change factors as they relate to the functions of management for both organizations including:
    • Changing External Conditions

Be sure to use a minimum of 3 external sources to support your analysis.

Submitting your assignment in APA format means, at a minimum, you will need the following:

  • Title page: Remember the running head and title in all capital letters.
  • Abstract: This is a summary of your paper, not an introduction. Begin writing in third-person voice.
  • Body: The body of your paper begins on the page following the title page and abstract page, and it must be double-spaced between paragraphs. The typeface should be 12-pt. Times Roman or 12-pt. Courier in regular black type. Do not use color, bold type, or italics except as required for APA level headings and references. The deliverable length of the body of your paper for this assignment is 3–4 pages. In-text academic citations to support your decisions and analysis are required. A variety of academic sources is encouraged.
  • Reference page: References that align with your in-text academic sources are listed on the final page of your paper. The references must be in APA format using appropriate spacing, hang indention, italics, and upper- and lower-case usage as appropriate for the type of resource used. Remember, the reference page is not a bibliography, but it is a further listing of the abbreviated in-text citations used in the paper. Every referenced item must have a corresponding in-text citation.

State how you plan to acquire the KSAs that you need but do not presently have. (E.g. take another course; do a special project with a firm, etc.)

Understanding what constitutes a well-done statement of TDRs(Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities) and KSAs(Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

When looking at many specific firms’ websites, you will almost surely run into many poorly done sets of TDRs and KSAs (Most often, the KSA description is lacking). Be sure to know what constitutes Knowledge, what is a Skill, and what are underlying Abilities required perform the job. This will help you eliminate poor sources quickly.

Use the web to find a specific organization that has a good statement of TDRs and KSAs for an entry-level job in your occupation. You are looking for a very high quality job description (TDR) and job specification (KSA), and many organizations will not have done them very well. I suspect that on average, you might have to look at 10 to 20 (or more) organizations’ websites before you find a well-done (complete, unambiguous, understandable, detailed) job description and job specification. KEEP LOOKING UNTIL YOU FIND IT, although you may be able to supplement a specific firm’s description with the knowledge requirements you pick up from professional associations.

Things NOT TO DO

DO NOT use a generic job search site like Monster or HotJobs.

Do not use an internship that you have had.

Do not use an informal statement by an old or new boss, a family member or a friend in some existing organization.

You are looking for a high quality, professional job analysis, and nothing short of that will let you do well on this assignment.

You paper should consist of the following points in the following order (PLEASE BE SURE TO FOLLOW THIS ORDER):

  1. Job Title and a short paragraph describing generally what is done on the job, and the name of the organization and its web address for the job.
  2. A list of the TDRs required in this job. They should be through, complete and understandable by somebody outside of your field of expertise. Write this in list form. You may copy (cut and paste) a list from a well-done web site.
  3. A list of the KSAs required to perform the job. These should conform to the definition of KSAs given above, and correspond to the TDR list (These need not be in the same order as TDRs).
    1. If they are well done on the firm’s web site, you may cut and paste the list into your paper. Simply acknowledge the source (web address is fine).
    2. If you say “Excellent communication skills” or “Excellent computer skills” are required, you are far too general and ambiguous, and you need to find a more specific statement of KSAs for the job.
    3. Saying something like: “Excellent communication skills” or “Excellent computer skills” without adequate explanation of the specific KSAs will result in lowering you grade by at least one letter.
    4. WHILE YOU MUST FIND A SPECIFIC FIRM’S WEBSITE, once you have one you can get help filling in specific KSAs from ONET (http://online.onetcenter.org/). Use our discussion of ONET in class as a guide, and keep in mind that ONET is much broader than a specific job. DO NOT START WITH ONET: Consult ONET after you have found a specific job at a specific firm. Note too that many professional associations have something that looks like certification criteria for entry level or early career positions. Check SHRM for HR; APICS for operations/logistics & IE; CPA exam for accounting; AMA for marketing; NASD for finance, etc. These will be a good deal broader than a specific entry level job, and you will more likely find they cover sets of related entry level/early career jobs in the occupation. This can help you with the KSAs for a specific job.
  4. Do a self-assessment of which KSAs you now have, and which you are lacking (to some degree).
  5. State how you plan to acquire the KSAs that you need but do not presently have. (E.g. take another course; do a special project with a firm, etc.)
  6. Write a succinct paragraph (150 word maximum) that you will use to describe your KSAs to a prospective employer. What are the most important things you want to tell a prospective employer about yourself, and how will you communicate those points?
  7. MANY organizations say things like “we want self starters who are driven to success and can work well in a team…” Anticipating this, what will you tell them? Much BETTER how will you demonstrate this to them? (“Actions speak louder than words…” my Mom (and possibly yours) would so often say!)
