How can an organization help employees make appropriate decisions when faced with ethical situations? What steps can an organization take to try to ensure that all parts of the organization operate ethically?

Scenario: An Ethical Dilemma

It’s half-time and the neighbors who regularly get together to watch the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday afternoon begin to make their way to the kitchen to refill their snack plates. While the others are out of the room, Carla lags behind to tell her neighbor, Angela, about Jaden, her nephew, and his recent good fortune. Jaden and his wife are about to put down a deposit on their first house. Jaden works for WellCare USA, a multi-state corporation with a center in Baltimore. Carla describes how thrilled the two of them are about the house, especially its location, as it will mean a much shorter commute time for Jaden. Carla goes on to say how very much Jaden appreciated Angela’s help last year in steering him to the open accounting position at WellCare USA. With Jaden just finishing college and the job market the way it was, that accounting position was like a dream come true for him.

Angela, who works in the Human Resources Department at WellCare USA, feels a knot in the middle of her stomach at the news. She is aware that a decision has recently been made by the leadership at WellCare USA to transfer the local accounting operation to Chicago, corporate headquarters, a cost-saving move. The decision won’t be announced for a few more weeks, but even so, Angela knows that Jaden will most likely not be offered a comparable job at WellCare USA or even be asked to move to Chicago to take one of the few accounting positions that will open up there. He is the newest employee to join the group and seniority is always a major factor in downsizing activities at WellCare USA.

1. What is the ethical dilemma Angela is faced with now? What should she do? Explain your answer using the course material to support the reasoning. Make sure to include the page number in the in-text citation.

Provide a brief overview of the work and indicate your area of major discussion and why you chose this area.

You are to choose one of the four recommended texts from the syllabus and write a book review. IF you choose either of the ‘Strengths Based’ texts, YOU MUST ENSURE your copy of the text will have a functioning StrengthsFinder assessment code–double check that your copy will have it or you will not be able to complete the text as designed. Your work should be typed in MS Word and submitted to the appropriate drop box by the submission due date (see course calendar for closing dates), it is perfectly fine to submit work early, as the drop box is open until closing date. Clearly break your work into sections for assessment purposes–the more clearly you show your work, the more clearly I can provide scoring feedback. No late submissions will be accepted, and submissions are to only be submitted via appropriate dropbox. Please be thorough and complete in your responses, and make absolutely sure you put all writing ‘in your own words’ as your score will reflect the depth, level, and detail provided. This work will be scored in conjunction with the WTAMU MBA scoring rubric for Objective 1.1 Professional Writing.

The review will be structured with 4 distinct sections:

Section 1:

Introduction. 350 words. Provide a brief overview of the work and indicate your area of major discussion and why you chose this area.

Section 2:

Chapter by chapter summary of the text., e.g., Chapter 1: 250 words on the main tenets of that particular chapter, on to the next. Summarize all chapters in the manner described in the previous sentence.

Section 3:

These written assignments should not exceed four pages. Up to three pages of supporting material (tables, figures, graphs) may be attached. This material should be referenced in the text of the write-up. Professional quality writing and presentation are expected. Write-ups must be double-spaced, in 12-point font with 1” margins.

Your answers and recommendations should be based on quantitative and qualitative analysis of case data. Your analysis should anticipate potential objections to your recommendations and illustrate its superiority over other alternatives.  It should be analytic and deliberative in tone.  The most persuasive documents are the ones that debate more than advocate.  After all, if you do not look at all alternatives, how do you know that you have chosen the best one? In answering the case questions, do not describe the case, but focus on the following three factors: 1) careful analysis of the situation, 2) description of your decisions or recommendations; 3) supporting logic and analyses. Assignments will be described in more detail as we get closer to the due date. Note that these assignments require data analysis as well as creativity/judgment.

Provide a brief overview of the composition of its strategic plan.

Select the long-term care facility of your choice from any currently operational U.S. long-term care facility, and research the strategic plan it has in place.

  • Provide a brief overview of the composition of its strategic plan.
  • In addition, pay particular attention to the mechanisms it has in place for evaluating and selecting strategic alternatives.
  • If none are readily visible, analyze the strategies in an effort to make educated assumptions on what tools might have been used, or what you feel should have been used (i.e., needs assessments, demand analyses, etc.).
  • Explain which strategies were/are used, and the reasons for the use of such tools.
  • In addition, do not forget to use citations and references throughout your paper.

Group Portion: 5 slides with speaker notes

Once the individual group members have completed their individual portions, the group will meet to discuss their findings. The group will then meet to discuss what they learned about the mechanisms used for strategy formulation in their U.S. long-term care facilities.

  • The group will then prepare a PowerPoint presentation that presents the group’s thoughts on the best ways to formulate and evaluate strategies.
  • In your presentation, provide examples from your research on actual strategic plans from U.S. long-term care facilities and how the facilities formulated and evaluated strategies.
  • Be sure to conclude your presentation with your group’s recommendations for what your long-term care facility should use to formulate and evaluate possible strategies.
  • Be sure to include citations and references in your answer.

Discussion Board 3- 4 paragraphs

When formulating strategies, there are 5 categories of strategy formulation available to utilize: directional strategies, adaptive, market entry, competitive, and implementation strategies. To be effective, the strategies must be formulated in a specific order.

  • Why is it so important to formulate strategies in this specific order?
  • Provide an example of each category of strategy formulation for discussion.
  • Do you feel that one type of strategy formulation is more effective than another for an acute care hospital? Why or why not?

Who are your top 2 global competitors in the market? Provide a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis for each competitor.

Primary Task Response: Within the Discussion Board area, write 600–800 words that respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. This will be the foundation for future discussions by your classmates. Be substantive and clear, and use examples to reinforce your ideas.

As you review the analysis conducted by Mike and Tiffany, you notice the area of competition is missing from the reports. Thinking about your project management training, you update the project schedule to include activities related to identifying competitors.

You talk with Mike and Tiffany at lunch. “You’ve done some great research and brought up some good ideas to implement in the presentation,” you say. “There is one element that we are missing.”

“One of the most important aspects of the strategy: our competitors,” Tiffany states.

“I’ve already done some analysis, and there are many in the global market. It seems like there are several office furniture companies thriving, but not as many custom furniture manufacturers,” Mike elaborates.

“Well, we need to provide the board with some solid competitors. I’ll work on finding our top two,” you say. Complete the following:

  • Who are your top 2 global competitors in the market?
  • Provide a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis for each competitor.
  • Why are they direct competitors?
  • What is their competitive advantage?
  • Could you form a cooperative strategy with any of the competitors?
    • If so, how?
    • If not, why?
  • What strategies could you use to build a competitive market profile?

Describe how a sample of DNA is collected and prepared for study.

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) profiling is a laboratory method used by forensic scientists to determine the identification of individuals by their unique DNA signature. Also known as DNA testing, this method has been used to diagnose potential genetic disorders, identify heritage, and provide forensic evidence.

  • Discuss scientific and technical concepts related to DNA profiling. Consider the following:
    • Describe how a sample of DNA is collected and prepared for study.
    • State the steps involved in determining the DNA sequence of a sample.
    • Discuss one type of DNA sequencing and the steps involved in that method.
  • Provide an example of the application of DNA profiling and discuss its efficacy related to this particular application. Consider the following:
    • Why is DNA testing important to this application?
    • What questions are addressed in this application?
    • What are the unique steps or techniques in this application that must be followed for it to be effective?
    • What alternative methods might be employed to address the same questions that can be answered via DNA testing?

Provide a minimum of two scholarly references. These scholarly references should be peer reviewed and from authoritative sources.

Identify the speaker, circumstances, and significance of the following quote for the themes of the epic:

Please write a paragraph response to TWO of the THREE questions below. You MUST answer QUESTION #2 and then EITHER question #1 OR question #3.  Each paragraph needs to be at least six to seven full, developed sentences. Specific reference to the text–ie. evidence for claims–will strengthen your responses. The grading of these responses will be as follows:  each question is worth 2 points and a full, thoughtful effort will receive 2 points; a halfhearted effort will receive 1 point; and no effort will receive no points.

  1. Consider the conflict that Achilleus suffers between, on the one hand, his own integrity and the sense of violation to the social code that has defined his existence, and, on the other, his responsibility to his “community”—the Greek army. Is Achilles’ continued withdrawal from the army justified? Does his reaction to the violation of the heroic code give him heroic stature? What is the relationship between vengeance and honor that Achilles seems to pursue? Is this problematic at all?

  1. Examine the three speeches of Aias (Ajax), Odysseus, and Phoinix in Book Nine. How are they different? What are the unique ways that each attempts to persuade Achilleus (Achilles) to relinquish his wrath? Do you find one speech more effective than the others?

  1. Identify the speaker, circumstances, and significance of the following quote for the themes of the epic:

Of possessions

Cattle and fat sheep are things to be had for the lifting,

And tripods can be won, and the tawny high heads of horses,

But a man’s life cannot come back again, it cannot be lifted

Nor captured again by force, once it has crossed the teeth’s barrier…

I carry two sorts of destiny toward the day of my death. Either,

If I stay here and fight beside the city of the Trojans,

My return home is gone, but my glory shall be everlasting;

But if I return home to the beloved land of my fathers,

The excellence of my glory is gone, but there will be a long life

Left for me, and my end in death will not come to me quickly.
