For your project, you will prepare a situation analysis and action plan based on a topic, trend, or issue you select and a specific organization you select. Read your course project description to learn the requirements for the project.

In this assignment, you will select an HRM topic and an organization for your project. Consider choosing a topic from your work environment. To do so may enable you to address and resolve an organizational impediment, as well as provide you with important critical thinking and plan development skills. This avenue may be particularly advantageous if your organization has international operations. Examples might include:

Since your graduation , you have been working as the victims’ assistant advocate for the office of the local county prosecutor. You have a great working relationship with the prosecutor, Mary, and the remainder of the office. Normally, when you speak, the staff and prosecutor know you are speaking from a knowledge base that you have gained from personal experience, research, and reading, so they know that your comments are facts. You like to use APA format to cite your sources, but this bulleted paper does not need to be in APA format.

You have decided to speak with the prosecutor, Mary, on behalf of Maureen, the college student who was a victim of date rape. You want to convince Mary to support a change in the prosecutor’s policy of not prosecuting date rape cases when drugs or alcohol are involved. Maureen has a strict policy: when someone wants to speak with her about changing an established policy, she wants the person to submit a paper of 3–5 pages containing topic bullets outlining his or her argument for the policy change prior to meeting her. She feels this way, she is not blind-sided, and she has an opportunity to research the topic prior to the meeting.

You follow her policy and write a paper using bullets only, hoping that you can persuade Mary and the chief prosecutor to change their policy or, at a minimum, meet with you for a discussion about changing the policy. Maureen knows other young women are being attacked and that very often, date rape drugs are being used.

• Educate Mary about date rape using statistics and information about date rape and date rape drugs to show her that Maureen is one of the types of victims who perpetrators take advantage of in these situations.

Assignment 1: LASA 2—Company Analysis Report

Review the following scenario:

Assume that you have recently been hired as the director of continuous improvement of a company. You are an outside hire with limited history of the firm and personal capital at the firm, and you are responsible for lean production, total quality management (TQM), six sigma, and best practice implementation. Lean production means doing more with less, such as less inventory, fewer workers, or less space. A recent trade in quality management is lean six sigma (also known as lean sigma) that integrates six sigma and lean production. The capacity for which you were hired has existed for three years with a direct line of report to the vice-president of operations and dotted line of report to the head of information technology (IT), the chief information officer (CIO), and the director of internal controls and audit. You are the second person to fill in this position. You have a team of internal consultants; half of your team has six sigma black belt or equivalent capabilities with the remainder having a solid understanding of operations and IT. You also have a budget for two external vendor resources. You have taken six months to familiarize yourself with the organization and its people, mission, goals, strategy, and structure. In this time, you have also evaluated current operations. At the end of this period, you are assigned to deliver a report identifying the three most promising avenues for achieving best practices within the company. You have already been told that the company suffers from both aging and complex information systems and that your recommendation must include a major upgrade of those systems. The executive officers anticipate major investments in IT over the next several years.    1. Are the roles and responsibilities in your organization properly defined and aligned to enable these changes? Who will perform these new/modified process activities, and what changes to their jobs do you anticipate?
   2. Is decision-making authority assigned so that the process changes you propose can be implemented and properly managed under the current structure? Who will own the process and the results? Based on the current structure, will they have the authority to make changes as necessary?
   3. Are the individuals with the right skills in place to implement these changes? If not, how will you attract the talent necessary to implement your changes? 6. Changes:

   Explain changes to the compensation and incentives at your company that are necessary to reinforce your recommendations and increase efforts for continuous improvement throughout the organization. Explain how your plan motivates employees, customers, and suppliers better.

Think about a decision you recently made in the workplace. Describe the situation and the decision made and consider the following:

• Do you feel you used a rational decision-making model?
  • If you did not follow the rational decision-making model exactly, did you follow even one of the steps – or some half way?

• Describe if you could have been using what we call bounded rationality and how?

• Finally, what about the third approach to decision-making – intuition? How did you use intuition in your decision-making process? Explain. (Remember that we often combine our “gut feelings” with some rational dimension.)
