Imagine that you have been appointed the Director of Health at the Kaluyu Memorial Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya – a for-profit hospital. The facility is also a referral hospital and receives severe cases of accidents, chronicle / communicable diseases and houses an HIV / AIDS ward. As you settle into your position, you realize that the employees always act scared as they approach their superiors. Some of the employees even deliver files and leave your office in a hurry.

As you make your routine departmental visits, you realize that there are tensions between nurses and doctors, and there is a sentiment that the nurses tend to do the majority of the work within patient care but the doctors get all the credit. You realize that the employees are always looking forward to the end of their shifts to go home. Some employees even come back to work wearing the same unwashed clothes as the previous day. Too many employees are calling in sick, and many of them give weak reasons for their tardiness.

There is also a sense that employees and nurses dominate other employees in similar positions. In meetings and conference calls some employees are always quiet and never participate. You notice that people with families tend to gather and talk quietly on breaks. The new mothers working for the hospital have to use bathrooms to pump breast milk for their infants and the refrigerators do not work well. Looking at the financial statements of the hospital, you realize that the hospital expenses are higher than the industry standard, and it makes losses year after year.

Write a four to six (4-6) page paper in which you:

1. Investigate the major demotivational factors at Kaluyu Memorial Hospital. Assess the level of impact that the identified factors could have on specific areas of service and business if the administration does not address the situation. Support your response with at least two (2) examples of the potential negative impact of the identified demotivational factors on the hospital.
2. Choose Maslow’s, Herzberg’s, or McClelland’s model of motivation, and argue the primary reasons why it is applicable to the Kaluyu Memorial Hospital scenario.
3. Formulate a communication system that will have the greatest impact on improving the situation, and specify the major reasons why your system will influence the employee behaviors for the better. Justify your response.

Description of LASA:

In this assignment, you will assess an organization’s current position in the internal and external environment.

Scenario:

You have been hired as a consultant to evaluate the performance of a manufacturing or service organization. As part of your function, you need to assess the organization’s current position with regard to their business operations, strategy, and organizational structure, as well as identify potential ethical issues management may face. The executive management team has asked you to submit a report of your findings.

Instructions:

Choose a publicly traded manufacturing or service organization to be the subject of your work for LASA 1 and LASA 2. (You should choose a different organization than you have used for previous assignments.) Select an organization about which there is an abundance of information made readily available to the public (via the corporate website, industry publications, business journals, etc.).

The opinions of Bartolome de Las Casas were influential in alerting Europeans to the treatment of Native Americans. Write a 400-word speech from the viewpoint of Las Casas explaining his opinions and how they affected attitudes in Europe.

The Ethics of Representing Others: The concept of representation is what compels us to ask the question, “Why are ethical issues central to documentary filmmaking?”  This question could also be phrased as, “What do we do with people when we make a documentary?”  How do we treat people we film; what do we owe them as well as our audience?  Should they receive compensation?  Should they have a right to block the inclusion of events that prove incriminating?  Is it all right to have repeat actions or conversations for the sake of the camera?  Does this compromise the integrity of their actions and the film’s claim to represent a reality that exists autonomously from its filming?”  (page 45)

Now, even though the above quote is referring to people and not animals, it still applies to Grizzly Man.  Ethical questions abound in the film, and since its release people have had pretty profound problems with how the filmmaker represented grizzly bears as being (somewhat) harmless creatures that have a moral center that makes room for people (the Grizzly Man) who have (what he thought were) pure intentions as to how to treat these animals.  He thought, literally, that the bears welcomed him as part of their pack; and he believed this in his soul (at least we are supposed to think he did).  But there are questions about that, questions that should have been asked even before the film got funded.

So I want you to write a paper (at least three pages in length, double-spaced, Times New Roman 12 pt. font, 1″ margins all around) that addresses all of the questions above.  What are the moral implications of making a documentary that features animals that have no idea what morality is, and what are the implications of making a film that does not care that the animals have no idea what morality is?  The film is obviously about the man, not the bears, even though the man would have us believe that all he cared about were the bears.  Were his intentions selfish?  Why or why not?  This is supposed to be a film about animal activism, but did he go about his activism in a moral way?  Did this film (as was its intent) make you care about the plight of bears more?  Did the filmmaker abuse the bears sense of their own life?  Did he exploit the very animals he was trying to protect?

These are the kinds of questions I want you to address.  Be as creative and as thorough as you can be, and quote the book, quote the film, so that your thesis will be as strong as it needs to be.

1. Identify the case study you have chosen on the title page of your assignment, for example, Demonstrating Effective Leadership: Case Study 23 A Speed Bump on Staff.
2. In the body of your paper, briefly summarize the case study. In your summary, be sure you identify who the leader is, the issue he or she is facing, and what you believe to be the cause of the issue. Southern Baptist Hospital (SBH) had long resisted the use of marketing, believing it was not an appropriate activity for a nonprofit organization. By the mid-1980s, however, the erosion of its market share due to growing competition forced SBH to adopt an aggressive marketing strategy.

Its primary initiative was a campaign of television advertisements aimed to reinforce for the general public the image of SBH as a high-quality institution. Because the organization was starting its marketing activities from scratch, ad production and airtime costs were expensive. The television commercials were professionally produced and received critical acclaim from the advertising community.

Following the public’s repeated exposure to these advertisements, a hospital executive requested information about the impact of the advertisements. The idea to study the campaign’s impact had not been considered earlier, and a belated evaluation effort was mounted to determine the extent to which the campaign had achieved the desired effect. Much to the consternation of SBH administrators, the evaluation found that the ads had had virtually no impact on the public’s already high perception of the institution, and no improvement in patient volumes, revenues, or market share could be attributed to the campaign. SBH administrators, committed to an expensive initiative, rationalized that the campaign had not aired long enough to generate the desired effect and invested even more money in the initiative.
