Section C2. Guide for Writing a Technical Brief Identifying information ‐Provide your name, class section (i.e. A, B, or C), due date, name of assignment at a minimum. Introduction ‐ Describe the setting/situation of the problem. List the “Givens.” More often than not, a figure should be used here to augment your description. In a simple math problem, this would be the “Given:” section. Problem Description ‐ State the problem to be solved. In some cases it is appropriate to discuss why problem solution is important (for example, solving a trigonometry problem assigned from class would probably not require this, but solving a design problem would). Make sure to state explicitly what is to be “found.” In a simple math problem, this would be the “Find:” section. 7 Problem Solution ‐ Describe exactly how you will or did go about solving the problem. Be succinct and clear. Typically you should begin with general approach followed by specific steps that you took. Result/Conclusion/”Answer” (if appropriate) ‐ This should be highlighted very clearly – perhaps boxed, underlined, etc. Tables and Figures ‐ Any tables and figures included should be labeled (i.e. Table 1), and should be presented in the text so that the reader knows what to look for in that Table or Figure. This means that somewhere in the text it should say something like “As shown in Table 1, the configuration marked A resulted in the higher temperature.” A table or figure that is not mentioned in the text should not be included at all. NOTES: You may want to have a fellow student read your solution and try to follow it. If someone not familiar with the problem could not follow your solution, you have not been clear enough. Avoid being wordy in order to “fill up” the space but make sure that you provide enough information for the reader to:  understand the problem being addressed,  understand its context and importance,  be able to figure out how you went about solving the problem  assess the accuracy of your approach/equations used, etc. Note that this is a very general description of a technical brief. The needs of your particular case may require you to add a section or do something slightly differently. Clarity and communication are generally more important than adherence to a format.

• Bill has been using his company-issued BlackBerry to run his own business on the side.

• After being disciplined for criticizing a customer in an email (sent from his personal email account on a company computer), Joe threatens to sue the company for invasion of privacy.

• One of the department supervisors requests your approval to fire his secretary for insubordination. Since the secretary has always received glowing reviews, you call her into your office and determine that she has refused to prepare false expense reports for her boss.

• Anna’s boss refused to sign her leave request for jury duty and now wants to fire her for being absent without permission.

Write a four to five (4-5) page paper in which you:

• Summarize the employment-at-will doctrine discussed in the text and then evaluate three (3) of the six (6) scenarios described by determining:

  • Whether you can legally fire the employee; include an assessment of any pertinent exceptions to the employment-at-will doctrine.

  • The primary action(s) that you should take to limit liability and impact on operations; specify the ethical theory that best supports your decision.

• Examine your state’s policy on employment-at-will. Analyze at least one (1) real-world example of an employee or employer utilizing your state’s employment-at-will doctrine in the last five (5) years. Include a summary of the main issue and the outcome in the identified real-world example.

In chapter 4 of the book, Bill Nichols writes:

“Put differently, documentary films usually contain a tension between the specific and the general, between historically unique moments and generalizations.  Without generalizing, documentaries would be little more than records of specific events and experiences.  Were they nothing but generalizations, documentaries would be little more than abstract treatises.  It is the combination of the two, the individual shots and scenes that locate us in a particular time and place and the organization of these elements into a larger whole, that gives the documentary tradition its power and fascination.”

We have seen this a lot this semester, the thin line between the general and the specific; but nowhere close to as much as it is presented in The Thin Blue Line.  As you know by now, it is a film that uses a mission in its motivation–the mission of getting to the truth of a crime by uncovering evidence that might not have been there before in a way to let the public know that, generally and specifically, the filmmaker thought that justice had not been served.  I want you to Google “results of The Thin Blue Line” or something similar in an attempt to get an idea what the film did after its release (it did A LOT).  And I would LOVE for you watch The Jinx (you can rent it on Amazon, it’s super cheap) and compare it to The Thin Blue Line.  It is FASCINATING, and much of it happened around these parts (Galveston especially, but also Houston).  Then I want you address the following in a 3 page paper (at least), double-spaced, Times New Roman 12 pt font, 1″ margins all around).

What role does media serve in the search for different forms of justice?  Be very specific, and use the book to help make your argument. There has been a TON of stuff that has happened recently about this (Ferguson, school shootings, etc); and while I don’t want you to get overly political here, I want you to talk about how the media has tried to bring a different form/forms of justice to these events.  I don’t want you to voice your opinion in overt terms, but rather I want you to discuss the media specifically in how they search for ways to find justice according to the media’s terms (different forms of media like TV, documentary film, newspapers, websites, etc).  Not how they present it, but how they act as justice makers/finders.  In The Jinx (without revealing too much), the filmmakers DID SOMETHING that the cops/FBI did not do/could not do, and as a result the filmmaker became a part of the story–which is exactly what happened in The Thin Blue Line.  So discuss this however you want, but keep it focused on how and why (specifically) the media thinks of itself as a part of the justice system in (particularly America).

Write a research report based on a hypothetical research study.  Conducting research and writing a report is common practice for many students and practitioners in any of the behavioral sciences fields.

A research report, which is based on scientific method, is typically composed of the different sections listed below:

1. Introduction: The introduction states a specific hypothesis and how that hypothesis was  derived by connecting it to previous research.
2. Methods: The methods section describes the details of how the hypothesis was tested and clarifies why the study was conducted in that particular way.
3. Results: The results section is where the raw uninterpreted data is presented.
4. Discussion: The discussion section is where an argument is presented on whether or not the data supports the hypothesis, the possible implications and limitations of the study, as well as possible future directions for this type of research.

Together, these sections should tell the reader what was done, how it was done, and what was learned through the research.  You will create a research report based on a hypothetical problem, sample, results, and literature review.  Organize your data by creating meaningful sections within your report. Make sure that you:

• Apply key concepts of inferential hypothesis tests.
• Interpret the research findings of the study.
• Examine the assumptions and limitations of inferential tests.
• Develop a practical application of the research principles covered in this course.

Focus of the Research Report

To begin, create a hypothetical research study (you do not have to carry out the study; you will just have to describe it) that is based on the three pieces of information listed below.  Once you have your hypothetical study created, write a three- to four-page research report (excluding title and reference pages) that outlines the study.  You are encouraged to be creative with your research study, but be sure to follow the format outlined below and use a writing style that is appropriate for scholarly research reports and adhere to APA formatting as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

Your hypothetical research study should be based on the following information:

• Recent research has indicated that eating chocolate can improve memory.  Jones and Wilson (2011) found that eating chocolate two hours before taking math tests improved scores significantly.  Wong, Hideki, Anderson, and Skaarsgard (2009) found that women are better than men on memory tests after eating chocolate.
• There were 50 men and 50 women who were randomly selected from a larger population.
• A t-test was conducted to compare men and women’s performance on an assessment after eating chocolate. The results showed an independent t-test value of t .05(99) = 3.43; p < .05

Your research study must contain the following:

1. Title Page
   1. Title of your report
   2. Your name

2. Introduction
   1. Introduce the research topic, explain why it is important, and present the purpose of the paper and the research question and hypothesis.
   2. Discuss how this study is related to other research on the topic.
   3. Elaborate on the information from the references you were given.  State how they relate to your hypothesis.
   4. Your introduction must:
      • Consist of a paragraph explaining what you are studying and why. Use previously cited research to explain your expectations and discuss how those expectations led to your hypothesis.
      • State a clear and testable hypothesis and whether it is one-tailed or two-tailed.
      • Make sure it is understandable to someone who has not read the rest of your pape yet.State the null hypothesis.
      • Include a justification of the direction of your hypothesis.  In other words, explain why you chose the direction of your hypothesis if it is one-tailed (e.g., previous research suggests that people with big feet are more likely to score higher on math  tests; therefore the hypothesis is one-tailed) or if it is two-tailed (e.g., previous research is not clear on which group will perform better; therefore, the hypothesis is two-tailed).
      • Describe why this study is important.
3. Method
   1. Design: State the experimental design of your study, the independent and dependent variables, and what the task was (e.g., what you had the participants do).
   2. Participants: Identify and describe your sample, how the participants were selected to be in the study, and why you chose them.  Provide details for how each individual was assigned to each group.
   3. Procedure: Describe the precise procedure you used to conduct this research (i.e., exactly what you did).  It should be clear enough that anyone could replicate your study.  This is the subsection where you tell the reader how you collected the data.
   4. Data Analysis: Describe the statistical procedure used in the study to analyze the data.
4. Results. In this section, you will describe the statistical results:
   1. State the statistical tests that were used.
   2. Justify the choice of test.
   3. State the observed value and significance level and whether the test was one or two tailed.
   4. State your conclusion in terms of the hypothesis.
   5. Did you accept or reject the null hypothesis?
5. Discussion: Discuss your results as they relate to your hypothesis.
   1. Did you accept the hypothesis or reject it?
   2. Compare your results to the previous studies mentioned in the introduction. Are your results similar or different? Discuss why.
   3. Tell the readers what your findings mean. Why did you get the results you did?
      • Identify limitations to your study.
      • Suggest ways your study could be improved.
      • Suggest ideas for future research, not just a continuation of your study, but research that is similar to this study. Perhaps one of the variables could be changed or a different sample could be investigated.
      • Finish with a concluding paragraph that is a statement of your findings and the key points of the discussion.
6. Conclusion: Write a paragraph detailing your experience with writing a research report. Discuss how easy/difficult it was to write a false report that reads like real results, and how this experience might affect you review research in the future. Do you think this experience will provide you with a useful skill in your potential career?
7. References: You will create a minimum of three fictitious references in the following format based on the information you have created in the preceding sections of the report:
   1. Author, A., & Author, B. (Publication year). Title of the article. Journal Name, volume number(issue number), page numbers.

In order to bargain for the health and safety of employees, the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union demanded that several employers disclose the generic names of chemical substances used or produced, as well as the medical records of employees. The employers refused, claiming that disclosure would both invade the privacy of employees and compromise trade secrets. With some limitations, the NLRB in 1982 held that the employers did not bargain in good faith when they refused to divulge such information.* While upholding the union’s request, the board asserted that few matters could be of greater concern to employees “than exposure to working conditions potentially threatening their health, well-being or their very lives.”

However, the board also ruled that the employers could conceal individual employee identities before turning over the medical records and also that the managements did not have to disclose the generic names of chemicals that constituted proprietary trade secrets. Thus, the NLRB attempted to strike a balance between conflicting interests: the employer’s desire to protect both worker privacy and trade secrets and the union’s need for material information about potentially life-threatening work conditions.
