Each  policy  position  should  be  approximately  a  single  page  in  length  (single‐spaced  for  a  total  of  two  pages  for  both  simulation  issues),  and  must  include  a  brief  historical  discussion  of  that  state’s  policies  in  that  issue  area,  followed  by  a  succinct  bullet  form  encapsulation  of  its  policies  (what  it  would  do  if  confronted  with  that  issue  again),  and  a  brief  bibliography  to  indicate  the  source  of  the  material.  The  bibliography  must  include  at  least  one  recent  Internet  source  and  at  least  one  relevant  library  source.  Students  are  not  to  fabricate  policies  and  must  provide  citations  for  all  the  state’s  listed  policies.  Internet  links  related  to  the  state’s  foreign  policy  are  welcome  in  the  bibliography.

The  policy  paper  is  worth  10%  of  the  total  grade  in  this  course.  Students  are  assigned  a  country  based  on  their  choices  and  the  grades  received  up  to  that  point  in  the  course  (participation  grades  determine  rank  and  mid‐term  grades  are  tie‐breakers).  The  website  will  post  an  updated  tallied  list  of  states  that  have  already  been  taken  on  a  weekly  basis.  Do  not  begin  writing  the  policy  paper  until  you  have  received  confirmation  that  your  chosen  state  is  not  taken  by  another  student.

Students  who  do  not  submit  a  policy  paper  may  not  select  a  state  for  the  simulations and  may  consequently  not  participate  in  the  simulations.  Late submissions will be penalized.

Policy Paper Topics  

Each  student  must  submit  a  policy  paper  as per the deadline indicated in the Agenda of the course syllabus outlining  a  given  state’s  foreign  policy  positions on  both  issues  immediately  mentioned below:

Policy Paper #1:

What is the given state’s policy on multilateral international pollution control, specifically in the area of sea pollution and radioactive materials? What traditional strategies would the state adopt in the event of a crisis? What is the state’s domestic population’s likely reaction to a pollution disaster? How dependent is the state on nearby fishing stocks and other economic uses of the oceans more generally? How dependent is the state on nuclear generators for its supply of energy?

Policy Paper #2:

What is the given state’s policy on ensuring the continued supply of oil to the world? How far is it likely to go to ensure this access and what multilateral approaches would it undertake to supplement other approaches to such a blockage? Where does the state traditionally obtain its oil supplies, what short-term alternatives exist, and how self-sufficient is the state? Is the state likely to gain or lose in the event of a sudden shortage in the supply of oil, and is it a member of OPEC?

SUBMISSION PROCEDURE  

You  will  be  submitting  your  paper assignment by  uploading  it  to  the  website.

To upload the paper:

1. Once you have completed your paper and you are ready to submit it, log in to www.econcordia.com and click on the Assessments link in your eConcordia portal for POLI 216.
2. On the Assessments page click on the Policy Paper Submission link.
3. Enter your username and password.
4. Click  on  the  Browse  button  and  select  your  paper (Word document)  to  upload    (this  is  the  same  procedure  you  use  to  attach  a  file  to  an  email  message).
5. Once  you  have  located  and  selected  the  file,  click  on  the  upload  button  and  your paper   will  be  uploaded  to  the  website.

If  the  upload  of  your  installment  was  successful,  you  will  receive  the  following   message:  “Your  assignment  was  successfully  received”.

To  verify  the  status  of  receipt  of  your  paper,  click  on  the  Check  Grades  link  in  your  Student  Menu.

There are many psychological approaches to addressing social problems (e.g., clinical, developmental, cognitive, phenomenological, neurobiological, behavioral). The social psychological approach is only one among many. Given that this is a social psychology course, the final paper requires evidence of your mastery of the theories and research you’ve studied over these past 11 weeks.

Your task is, therefore, (1) to review the social psychological literature that pertains to a given social problem of your choice; (2) to identify gaps in that literature that need to be studied; and (3) to identify a potential research question that needs to be studied so that you may add to the literature and advance knowledge that can benefit society.

The Assignment (5–7 pages)

• Select and describe a social problem in your field of interest.
• Explain why you selected the social problem.
• Research at least five journal articles related to the social problem.
• Describe two gaps in the literature related to the social problem you selected in which you could develop further research and justify your selection.
• Through a social psychology lens, develop a research question that a social psychologist might use to conduct research.

Carefully read through all components (listed below) required for completion of the Research Project. In selecting your project topic, ensure that you will be able to ascertain the appropriate data/information needed to complete the project in terms of the deliverables.

Select a health care organization (local or national, large or small, public or private) and perform a needs assessment/gap analysis. You may utilize your own organization if you are employed in a health care related company. You may approach the Research Project from a (1) Human Resources, (2) Operations, or (3) Facilities perspective. You may select an organization in your own community.

1. Human Resources: staffing, training, recruitment, retention, job function redesign, etc.
2. Operations: delivery of service/care, access, wait times, equipment usage, process improvements, resource optimization, regulatory compliance, etc.
3. Facilities: space planning, construction, redesign, relocation.

The components for the Research Project include the following:

1. Title Page
2. Executive Summary (Needs Content Criteria)
3. Description of the organization (history, length in service/operation, how many beds? clients served? location; rural vs. urban, satellite locations, total number of staff, client usage information/demographics, etc.)
4. Needs Assessment/Gap Analysis: What is not currently being offered? Room for improvements? Service delivery deficits? Personnel issues/shortages? Justify with supporting data and statistics.
5. Propose an intervention (service or facility) based on the needs/gap analysis.
6. Justify your proposed intervention by providing an analysis from:
   1. Cultural
   2. Social
   3. Legal
   4. Economics
   5. Regulatory
   6. Reimbursement
   7. Managed care
   8. Health legislation
   9. Contracts perspectives
7. Pick a minimum of three of the elements listed above depending on the organization selected and which apply to the specific organization/situation selected.
8. Create a plan to implement your intervention. Identify the stakeholders involved, and their role (s) in implementing the intervention. Include finance and staffing elements required to implement the intervention.
9. Develop a marketing communication plan on how the stakeholders will be informed, kept up-to-date, etc. prior to the intervention, during the intervention, and post intervention.
10. Develop a plan for measurement effectiveness of the intervention. What indicators will determine if the intervention is successful?

Writing the Research Project

The Research Project:

1. Must be 10 to 12 double-spaced pages in length, and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
2. Must include a title page with the following:
   1. Title of paper
   2. Student’s name
   3. Course name and number
   4. Instructor’s name
   5. Date submitted
3. Must begin with an introductory paragraph that has a succinct thesis statement.
4. Must address the topic of the paper with critical thought.
