Last unit and this unit, we are seeking to understand our disciplines better through analysis of their interpretive frames, or lens. These interpretive frames, as we noted, can be theoretical approaches (cognitivism, social construction) or research methodologies (quantitative, qualitative) or even genres (case study, research report, literature review).
Thus, theoretical approaches, methodologies, and genres are all ways of \”framing\” an issue or a topic. Each discipline has its preferred theories, methods, and genres that tell us something about the kind of information and presentation are valued.
The goal of this writing assignment is to learn more about writing in our discipline through examining its genres and to select a genre for our final projects.

To gather information for this writing assignment, you will:
Locate and closely review three examples of your genre and compile a bibliography (following the documentation system of your discipline) to append to your analysis paper. Attempt to locate instructional materials, templates, and other literature about the genre.

Compose an analytical paper of 3-4 pages that synthesizes your answers to the questions–your paper should synthesize your findings in each of the categories and include concrete details to illustrate your findings.
Assessment:
I will examine the following elements of your finished project to assign a letter grade.
Comprehensiveness: Refers to your careful, thoughtful responses to the genre analysis questions and your ability to synthesize your findings into a coherent \”portrait\” of the genre.
Evidence: Refers to the extent to which you use concrete examples from your genre analysis to support your assertions about the genre.
Analysis: Refers to the clarity, sophistication, and persuasiveness of your analysis of how the genre shapes the reading and writing experience.
Grammar & Readability: Refers to the extent to which your writing conforms to standards of grammar and correctness (i.e. your prose needs to be free from grammatical errors and written in a style that is conversational, yet serious enough for an academic audience).
Documentation: Refers to the accuracy of your in-text and end-text documentation of your outside sources, which will be, at minimum the three genre examples that will serve as your primary evidence.
