This Is the Title of My Essay in Boldface This is the abstract (about 150-250 words, and single spaced). This paper presents a case study of the adjective ready and discusses its properties when it occurs in the Tough construction (TC). The paper discusses the active and passive infinitive variation in the TC with evidence from the Corpus of Late Modern English Texts, the British National Corpus, and the Oxford English Dictionary. The ambiguity created by the active infinitive and the effect of the semantics of the subject on the choice of the infinitive form are also discussed. The results show that the TC with ready has become more frequent in BrE, and unlike with typical Tough predicates, the passive infinitive has persisted, most likely because of the possible ambiguity with the active. The data also show that when the subject is [+HUMAN], the passive infinitive is used exclusively. 1 Introduction In this section you introduce the topic of you paper and the goals of the study. The essay is written using Times New Roman 12 point, and the margins are 2.5 centimeters around. On top of the first page (only the first page!) provide your name and other pertinent information. The line spacing is 1.5 so that it is easier for the teacher to make markings between the lines, and it also improves readability. The length of the essay (excluding references and appendices) should be about six pages. 2 Background In this section, you discuss your secondary sources (grammars, dictionaries, journal articles, book chapters, books, etc.), and explain how they tie in with your topic. Here, if you have not done so in the introduction, you can (re)state your research question(s) and/or hypothesis in relation to the background materials. 3 Materials and method In this section, you introduce you materials, i.e., the corpus or corpora that you have used. If you are using well-known corpora such as the BNC, COCA, COHA, and so forth, a short and general description is enough. Indicate if you, for instance, are focusing on a particular segment of a corpus such as the spoken section of the BNC. If you have collected your own corpus, give a detailed description about the process and the contents of the corpus. When you are describing your method, be specific. Tell which concordancer(s) you used (BNCweb / BYU interface / AntConc / etc.), which search string(s) you used, and comment on the precision and recall. If you had to go through the examples manually, tell what kind of irrelevant tokens you discarded (give examples!). In general, walk the reader through the whole process by which you ended up with the relevant instances you will be discussing in the paper. 4 Results / Findings Here you present your findings. What kind of instances you found, how many, in which segments of the corpus or corpora, etc. Tables and/or graphs are usually helpful here to illustrate and organize your data. In this paper, which is quite short, I would recommend you include tables and graphs in the Appendix. 5 Discussion In this section you discuss your findings. What came up in the data; what was interesting; what was surprising; and so forth. Try to find explanations for the phenomena. 6 Conclusion Restate the research questions and goals, and how they were (or were not!) achieved. Restate the main findings and conclusions. Present some avenues for further research. References (follow the APA style! Notice single line spacing) Bardel, C., Falk, Y., & Lindqvist, C. (2013). Multilingualism in Sweden. In D. M.
